It amazes me what people will come up with next.
And saddens me. Some of us may think,"Now why did they go and mess with the "Ten Commandments"? How can you ever improve on what is commonly known as the Charleton Heston version? And just to prove it - ABC ran both versions within a few days of each other. I was impressed with how far we've come in being able to depict reality. Ok, that might be a little far-fetched. We can only begin to imagine what the plagues were like or the reality of walls of water standing at attention on each side of you while you literally cross a sea on dry land. This new version got a lot of things "right". Though not as spectacular (I really think the orchestra score in Charleton's version helped things out immensely), what the people walked up looked more like what we usually observe when the divers go diving, etc. Except it was wet. Muddy. God took the trouble to open a path in the sea. He is perfectly capable of having had said path completely dry. Which is what the Bible says. Minus one for the new version. Not that Charleton's version made a good reality show. When Charleton (a.k.a. Moses look-a-like)threw down those tablets, that was something to write home about. Not only did those tablet pieces effectively skewer the golden calf, it caused an earthquake to swallow up a lot of those not-too-obedient Israelites. In contrast, the new version (I could call it Dougray's version, but he just didn't have the charisma of Charleton - though he was awfully cute, even in a beard) had lots of violence after the initial flinging down of the tablets. Great for ratings, and a great way to emphasize - now, just what were the producers, directors, etc. trying to emphasize? The thing is, this violence really happened. This is scriptural, though I read that it was the Levite tribe who were involved here. Read? You know, in the Bible. The Book before the movie. I could go on and on (but won't) about how this was accurately portrayed and this was nowhere near it (I don't remember Joshua being mentioned as having a love interest in Egypt, do you?), but that would be pointless. My point is this. If you want to see the love and justice of our mighty God in action as regarding His people, there's a best seller out there that can't be beat. Can't ever be improved on. Will never be depicted accurately - especially by those who don't believe it in its entirety. And has the power to bring salvation to those who do.
